eInvoicing: The Upside Down Cloud Application

It’s hard enough keeping track of EDI messages, standards, deadlines and systems requirements for different countries’ tax authority. And requirements change quickly, so if you’re a growing company, the cost of supporting those requirements gets expensive. The challenge with e-invoicing is that traditional technology approaches have not worked to streamline what is an inter-company process, according to industry observers.
Is Supplier Portal really Electronic Trading

More and more, I’m hearing about Retailers or other buying organizations that either have, are in the process of implementing, or are looking at investing in a supplier portal service for electronic trading. Certainly there may be some need for something like this, however I would caution those organizations to truly look at the value that you as the Retailer or Sponsor of this technology are gaining with this investment. I’ve addressed this topic a few times in the past but wanted to make sure that those companies going down this path are making an informed decision. Below are reasons for thinking about Supplier portal –

For years we’ve been aware of Manufacturing Companies implementing LEAN initiatives. Those same concepts were looked at for the Retail industry over the last 5 years, and companies were building out teams that were tasked with looking within their organization to improve the customer experience and provide better value through the elimination of waste. These days those same principles are being used, but many organizations are taking the concept future through “Green” initiatives.

It was great seeing many of you at the U Connect 2011 Conference this week. It’s good to see that attendance is growing a bit more over the years. I think that it’s important for companies to be in tuned to what is going on with Supply Chain Management these days and how issues with a given supply chain are being addressed through process change or through use of technology. I bring up U Connect because of some of the things that I’ve learned while attending the conference.
SaaS vs Managed Services; The ARE Different

I've written plenty about getting suppliers into electronic trading with their partners. I've shared that if you have EDI services and so do you partners, you should be collaborating so that you can exchange data electronically. I've also shared that if you have EDI capabilities and your convinced that bigger partners are the only ones that are qualified to have EDI capabilities, you're making a poor assumption. Many smaller to mid sized supppliers do indeed have the ability, but have not shared they can exchange with you. You should put together a strategy to work with these smaller companies. Lastly, if you yourself do not have EDI capabilities, it's not too late to make a difference in your organization.

There’s SaaS. You know—software as a service. There’ s IaaS, which is infrastructure as a service. And did you know, there’s also PaaS, a.k.a. platform as a service? It was unfamiliar to me up until about a month ago, when I was asked to talk to a university professor about how PaaS is changing the software development landscape.

Business intelligence, or BI, has long been a valuable mechanism for helping companies better understand how they’re performing, how well products are developed, marketed and sold, and even what their competitors are up to. I’ve covered business intelligence for many years, either directly or as an (important) offshoot of other technologies like radio frequency identification (RFID).

SaaS-based Models Are Not Too Close for Comfort

It appears, based on ec-bp.org’s recent survey of SaaS-based solutions for EDI and supply chains, that there’s some trepidation about software-as-a-service. So much so that more than half (56 percent) of the survey respondents said they aren’t comfortable using SaaS for their ERP services, and almost half (45 percent) said they aren’t comfortable with SaaS for their supply chains.
