All sectors of the Swiss government have been equipped to process e-invoices since 2012. To date, however, only 14 percent of invoices the Swiss government receives are electronic, and officials want to see that number increase. The majority of the approximately 700,000 invoices currently submitted to the Swiss government annually are filed in paper form. They then must be scanned and digitized.

By mandating electronic invoices in B2G transactions, the Swiss are joining other European nations, such as Slovenia, Portugal and France, who recently enacted legislation requiring e-invoicing.

According to a press release issued by the Swiss government, the concerns of SMEs is considered to exempt small transactions from the electronic requirement. The Swiss government has pledged to provide support to suppliers as they transition to the new method of invoicing.
