Suppliers in the Chain

bigarm-littlearmI’ve been looking at an old topic recently - EDI testing. For you who have followed ec-bp.com since its humble beginnings, no doubt you recall our opinions regarding testing and charges associated with them. The issue hasn’t changed much. It seems retailers still need to test the documents they are asking their suppliers to submit, and suppliers keep trying to lower their expenses by trying to avoid testing. At what point do these opposing interests amount to mutual abuse? Read more...

Slave Labor Plays Prominent Role In Worldwide Supply Chain

Human RightsAccording to Verite, a think tank whose mission is promoting the ethical treatment of laborers worldwide, at least one in three foreign workers who responded to their recently released survey on slave labor in the Malaysian electronics market toils in conditions of forced labor.

Innovation in the Supply Chain

DNA-StrandI've been reading "The Innovator's DNA," an interesting book about how companies can set themselves up to be better through what they call 'disruptive innovation.' I don't think this is an entirely new concept because there have certainly been plenty of innovations created my many companies, and those companies have thrived and grown. What's different in this book is that it provides specific traits and actions that companies can take to find and develop people who can make a difference. Read more...

Fixing Your Supply Chain

thumb 5 opportunities Supply chains are inherently complex. They are also every-day systems that require full time attention. OPSrules had put together a highly simplified recap of the top 5 things you can (should?) look at in your supply chain. These represent places to start when thinking about putting fixes in place.

Product Safety in Your Supply Chain

CPSCYour supply chain is in great shape. You have visibility with your suppliers and with your customers, and understand where orders are, and when issues arise you can spot the source and track it down. But when your products arrive, are you certain they meet all the safety and regulatory constraints that make them safe to sell? In 2013 alone there were 28 million product recalls. If you were involved with any of them you have a good idea what information you didn't have at your fingertips. Is there a better way to track and manage this sensitive information? Read more...

Disruption in the Supply Chain

disruption 1For most of us involved in managing the supply chain, disruption is the last thing we want to consider. But many organizations are actually fostering disruptions of their own enterprise with goals to innovate and change the way things are done and the results that are achieved. Disruption caused by innovation can be seen as a progressive way to bring positive if dramatic changes to processes that have been functional for a long time. Read more...

Visibility Rising to the Top

realtimeSupply chain visibility is an interesting topic. At least it's interesting to those who want to talk about it, but possibly not so interesting to those that actually need to do something about implementing and making it a reality within their own enterprise operations. The disconnect however, does seem to be narrowing if KPMG's recent report is to be believed. Read more...

Does 'Navel-Gazing' Deliver the Best Visibility?

navel-gazingWhen it comes to developing reliable supply chain connections, it's important to consider that there are multiple sources of data that produce multiple instances of the data that is collected. The majority of manufacturers have at least 2 sets of applications that are used for managing their supply chain. Those include an ERP system and an EDI/transaction management system. The question is, which application set can deliver the best and most reliable visibility into the supply chain? Read more...

Establishing Visibility - The Long View

TakingTheLongViewI've been harping on what it takes to be visible... that is to have visibility into your supply chain. The truth is that gaining visibility is an ongoing process that is never really 'done.' But that's the nature of the supply chain. Once you have good connectivity with one trading partner and the facilities they use, another trading partner comes along with an entirely different set of connections and different service providers.  Read more...

Filling in the Holes in Visibility

Deutsche Telekom M2M Real Time Cargo Monitoring Segment 4459When we talk about having visibility into the supply chain, most of us think about being able to track the data about what orders are in what process of being delivered to their destination. When products are on the shelf, even though they may not yet be in the hands of the consumer, they have been delivered to the retailer, so the responsibility of delivering the product has been completed. But there are situations where the liability remains with someone other than the retailer, and it's possible to monitor the transport at a more granular level in some cases. Read more...
