Time to Celebrate!

Before I took the great leap of faith into retirement, I used to love this time of year. Not that I’m that much of a holiday guy, but things sort of progressively slowed down as the end of the year approached and people were generally just a little nicer. So, it was a time to get caught up a bit and to work under a little less pressure than usual. Plus, with all the people out of the building on vacation, lunch lines in the cafeteria were shorter.

Yet another reason I like this time of year is it’s when the ‘Best of….” lists are published. I wonder every year, though, how the authors of these lists have any credibility left at all. They seem to always get it wrong. I mean, everyone knows The Suburbs by Arcade Fire was the best album of 2010, and Matterhorn by Karl Marlantes was the best book, right? Well, rather than getting worked up about the past, another end-of-year tradition, creating New Year’s resolutions, is something I personally find more productive. If you haven’t finished your list, I have a recommendation for you.

If you’re an athlete in almost any sport, you know how you’ll be measured. In basketball, you have points, rebounds, assists, and steals per game. Guys at the ‘skill’ positions in football know it’ll be yards per carry, catches, yards per pass attempt, and stuff like that. Baseball, my specialty, has been infused, or some would say overwhelmed, by a dramatic increase in the availability and use of statistics, such as VAR, WHIP, OBP, etc., to measure almost every nuance of the game (thank you Mr. Bill James!). That’s in addition to the standard batting averages, ERA, fielding percentage, etc.

Let’s say you’re an experienced EDI analyst, an expert mapper and a top-notch translator jockey. What are the career options for someone with your talents? Are you “stuck” in your current role, or are there other areas where you may be even more effective in your organization? Maybe surprisingly for you, but not for me, I think there are lots of opportunities out there for you. Read more...
To Outsource, or Not…..

Why do some companies outsource their EDI processes? The same question could be asked about HR, payroll, manufacturing, and any other process that’s been shipped elsewhere. The answer you’d probably expect to hear would be ‘cost savings’, but is that the whole story, or do other factors enter into the equation?

When you hear the word ‘diversity’, do you normally think about hiring, work practice, and contract issues based on gender, race, or ethnicity? A lot of managers and other employees have participated in diversity training and are aware of what it means and its potential benefits.

When was the last time you spent a couple of unplanned moments with someone who really doesn’t know you but is critically important to you or your team? Did you take advantage of that time, or did you let the moment pass? If you had a great elevator speech, you could have put it to use in that situation. You‘re probably thinking: “what the heck is an elevator speech and what’s an elevator have to do with it anyway?” Let’s get into that.

Change is one of those concepts that make most of us cringe at its mere mention. Whether it is benign as changing dinner plans with one’s spouse, or as dire as divorcing said spouse (funny how doing the former very often may lead to the latter, but I digress) every fiber in our character wants to resist it and keep the status quo. To deal with this, change management has become an academic pursuit, as well as embedded itself within the corporate lexicon, which have produced countless strategies on dealing with this force in one’s personal life as well as in the business environment.
