Transportation has always been an opportunity to centralize and get some benefits. 3M started the concept of Load Control Centers(LCC) and lots of others followed suit. The LCC is simply centralization of transportation planning and execution. Benefits include:
- better pricing from centralized transportation sourcing
- development of standardized operating procedures
- fewer planners than in several separate operations
- ability to combine more shipments and loads because of greater visibility
- electronic integration with carriers
Because most companies do not have a lot of the required skill sets, outsourcing brings a lot to the table. But there are some good choices available:
1) Outsource whole thing: Business Process Outsourcing (BPO). Company manages strategically while BPO manages tactically.
2) Outsource with intent to bring back in home.
3) Use consultants in an advisory role.
One of drawbacks of the LCC was building a complete network of electronically-connected trading partners. A lot of time and effort was spent in connecting trading partners. Very difficult connecting partners who, at that time, saw no benefit in the Internet. Any LCC had numerous holes in its visibility. That meant the customer could not completely trust the results. The LCC had to take a fall-back decision to not managing anything but fleet carriers and rail. They had big troubles with small carriers and anything international.
Along came some revolutionary stuff. Apple built on the premise that applications and data were device-independent. Apps and data didn't live in your device, the lived in the Cloud! Next revolution was by Facebook, LinkedIn and a host of companies. They made it so simple to hook up with others that no one could resist
So, Social Networking and the Cloud have made attempts at Load Control Centers now possible and this enables the Transportation Control Tower. So we can now define the Tower as a more modern LCC! It now can be enterprise-wide!
Now we can use LinkedIn, Facebook, Retail Universe, or a host of Social Networks to hook up to almost anybody in the World! So what's this got to do with logistics management and transportation control towers? Transportation control towers only work when they have timely, accurate information across the entire supply chain. Supply chain visibility and event management works best in a many-to-many environment.
Can you imagine the time and expense if every shipper had to connect one-by-one with the same vendors that everyone else was using? Why not just "friend" carriers, railroads, airlines who are already on these Social Networks? Add in Cloud-based Transportation Management Systems (TMS) to do routing, scheduling, payments, auditing, measuring and now the Transportation Control Tower makes sense.
So end-to-end visibility is the keyword. We are working towards standardized business processes across the enterprise. All this will let us control costs, manage performance, strive towards customer satisfaction (and the repeat business that comes with it), and become GLOBAL. Yes, there will still be gaps when we lay out the supply chain, but not the unattainable.
