Non – Standard EDI data = Failure to Communicate

I love small, local restaurants (in case you didn't already know that). They are typically pragmatic in creating their menus. One of my favorite local diners has possibly the world's greatest chili. They make it somewhere out behind the building, in a secret cauldron. But they admit that they either don't have the skill, or desire to develop their own salad dressings. So they serve Newman's Own dressings, for all the right reasons. Read more...

Analysis of “Accounting for EDI Development Costs” Survey

EDI_cost_surveyec-bp.org recently asked you to provide feedback regarding your view of development costs associated with EDI processes and systems. The results are interesting but not particularly surprising. What is disappointing about the overall results is that the majority of respondents talk about the negative aspects of spending rather than about the potentially enabling technologies they are putting into place.

EDI Problems?

problemI just had a chance to look through the results of our recent survey on EDI costs. Some interesting responses were there, with not a lot of surprises.  I’m sure one of my fellow writers will provide a summary for the class. What really caught my attention, though, were the verbatim responses.

Put Communication at the Top for EDI Success

Customer_SuccessIn the recent survey ec-bp.org conducted to find out just how well EDI implementations have gone, and what went wrong, there were more successful initiatives than not. In fact, when asked about eight separate aspects of their implementations and which were successful, more than half of the respondents identified four of the aspects as successful. The other four aspects were listed as successful by more than one-third of the respondents.

How can Finance get into the EDI world

paper-stackImage that its Friday morning, just like all of the others, the Accounts Payable Manager comes out of his/her office to the sound of paper being shuffled throughout the AP department. He/she looks over their empire of personnel and watches as each clerk pulls a check from one pile, the paper remittance details from another pile and then any backup for that remittance (debits, notes) from another pile and then puts each of these into a windowed envelope and inserts the envelope into the stack with the others. Then repeats that process over and over for the balance of an hour.

Is XML EDI? Does the Music Industry Really Know What They Are Doing?

edixmlOver the years you have read articles from me on knowing the data type that your trading partners are supporting with others, and to collaborate with these partners to make sure that an initiative being rolled out adds value to both sides. Which Standards to use (VICS, UCS, EDIFACT, straight X12, etc.). Which transactions (Is an order an 850 or an 875 or an EDIFACT ORDRS)? And being consistent with the use of tags, nodes, Segments, elements etc for your industry. These are all extremely important to the success of a electronic trading partner relationship. ASN - The Most Valuable EDI Document

asnDebate continues about whether the ASN is of enough value that it deserves being supported. In my findings, the ASN is probably the single most important document in the supply chain process. ROI for the ASN is estimated from $5 when used for simple confirmation purposes to as much as $50 when used for visibility and automated receiving. All EDI transactions have their individual ROI, however most do not have the scope of impact on multiple departments that the ASN has. Below are typical values -

Preparing for your new EDI Implementation

preparationWell, we’re at the end of the first quarter of 2011. The economy is looking better. You’ve got your 2011 projects underway. For many of you, you read a few of my articles in the last 4 -5 months and have decided that one of the projects would be add more suppliers to your Electronic Trading program, add another transaction to your library of EDI documents. Or maybe you’ve committed to management that you’ll support a new method of orders or distribution, such as Factory Direct or Cross Dock. Now you’ve realized “how am I going to get this done?”
