Why Are EDI Implementations So Tough?

ECIimplemenationThis month, ec-bp.org polled you... our readers about your experience with EDI implementations, and boy did you answer. The poll revealed that the biggest implementation problems stem from trading partner issues rather than technological glitches. Forty-seven percent reported difficulties in complying with trading partner requests that ranged from "numerous and stringent requirements" to "insistence on putting data in the wrong data fields." The most common used phrase in respondents' complaints of this type was "non-standard standards." Read more...

Summertime Heat

hotsunSummer is upon us and the heat is rising, at least in the South and the East. We've been watching a couple trends in the EDI world that are not particularly new, but can be viewed as indicators. The question is though, indicators of what? Read more...

EDI Transactions – Calculating the Cost

money_on_tableIt’s fairly well documented that EDI and automated B2B processes can save money over manual, paper-based transactions. But just how much money are buyers and suppliers paying per EDI transaction, and are there ways to cut costs?

Would You Change If... Survey Results

SwitchAwaysmWhen I first took up the 'profession' of sales in the 70s, the school of thought was that by leading a conversation and using certain techniques, it was possible to get someone to buy what you were selling. In my case it was photocopy machines. There were two key phrases that were popular at the time, and fortunately both (along with the whole manipulative sales approach) have pretty much fallen out of favor. I bring this up because in our last survey, we asked one of those key phrases; "What would it take for you to switch EDI provider." Read more...

EDI Transactions Tell Your Fortune

crystalballEDI produces a lot of data. Of course that's no shock to anyone looking at their VAN bill, but when you consider the volume of transactions and the number or companies involved, it would seem that there is a wealth of data in those transactions. The data now covers (depending on the trading partners) every aspect of the order process, from initial P.O. to final payment, with plenty of status updates along the way. So, what can be learned from all the data? It turns out that when looked at as an aggregate and put through the right analytical processes, there's plenty to be learned - and predicted. Read more...

The Value Add is the Sweet Spot of Today’s VANs

vanValue-Added Networks (VANs) have been around for more than 30 years. But as Scott Lewis, senior product marketing manager at IBM’s Sterling Commerce puts it, “today’s VAN is definitely not your father’s VAN.” VANs have evolved from simply being a managed network on which to exchange EDI information and documents between a company and its trading partners to a more robust service that includes not only the network but also a variety of services aimed at facilitating more effective commerce amongst numerous organizations.

The ROI of EDI - Survival or Profitability

An illustration of a company's supply chain

Is there a return on investment calculation for EDI, or is ROI simply a matter of keeping or gaining a customer? Should there even be a return on an investment for EDI? These are questions that continue to crop up whenever the issue of EDI upgrades, additions, or staffing levels are at hand. But I think these questions are misplaced at best and miss the point of EDI completely. Here’s why.

EDI Going Mobile

SmartphonesMoving EDI data around the globe is old hat to most of the folks reading this ec-bp newsletter. Managing the connections and translations can get complex and picky when it comes to the details of the files and the changes that need to be incorporated into translators to make processes flow properly. For most EDI practitioners, their roles are fairly well defined and fit well with established concepts. But as computing devices become more pervasive and processing power more available, I think the line between what is EDI and what is associated with end user interaction is changing. Read more...

XML is Dead - Long Live XML

xml_kills_ediThe old debate about XML replacing EDI as a format for transacting global business has all but faded from conversation. But that doesn't mean that the format itself is gone. The use of XML as a transfer medium between applications has become a default because of its flexibility and its ease of configuration. But the bigger question is, "Does the format of the data actually matter?"
