Why Are EDI Implementations So Tough?

ECIimplemenationThis month, ec-bp.org polled you... our readers about your experience with EDI implementations, and boy did you answer. The poll revealed that the biggest implementation problems stem from trading partner issues rather than technological glitches. Forty-seven percent reported difficulties in complying with trading partner requests that ranged from "numerous and stringent requirements" to "insistence on putting data in the wrong data fields." The most common used phrase in respondents' complaints of this type was "non-standard standards." Read more...

SwitchAwaysmWhen I first took up the 'profession' of sales in the 70s, the school of thought was that by leading a conversation and using certain techniques, it was possible to get someone to buy what you were selling. In my case it was photocopy machines. There were two key phrases that were popular at the time, and fortunately both (along with the whole manipulative sales approach) have pretty much fallen out of favor. EDI Transactions Tell Your Fortune

crystalballEDI produces a lot of data. Of course that's no shock to anyone looking at their VAN bill, but when you consider the volume of transactions and the number or companies involved, it would seem that there is a wealth of data in those transactions. The data now covers (depending on the trading partners) every aspect of the order process, from initial P.O. to final payment, with plenty of status updates along the way. So, what can be learned from all the data? It turns out that when looked at as an aggregate and put through the right analytical processes, there's plenty to be learned - and predicted. Read more...
